There are two types of subscriptions: Silver and Gold. Silver is free and allows you to do anything but play multiplayer games online (with the exception of FFXI, which requires a Squenix subscription). What you can do includes downloading demos and videos; talking to friends, keeping a friends list, and keeping track of their gaming achievements, sending/receiving voice and text messages.

Gold is the other type of subscription. Every 360 console comes with 30 days of Gold free once you register a Silver account with it. Gold allows you to do everything a Silver account does, plus play games online.

There, now there's no excuse for spamming up random threads with questions about XBL subscriptions. If you want anything else answered, post it here.

Also, the pricing is as follows...

You can pay via XBL (using a major credit/debit card) for Gold in payments of -
a ) $7.99 a month.
b ) $19.99 for three months
c ) $49.99 for a full year

These re-up themselves so you won't have to constantly redo them.

You can also use cash/credit cards at your local game retailer for XBL cards that allow the same plans for about the same prices.

Also there are several packages you can get -
a ) For $39.99 you will get three months of Xbox Live Gold, a headset, $10 mail in rebate, and 100 points to use in the Xbox Live Marketplace.
b ) For $69.99, you'll get a full year of Xbox Live Gold, a headset, 200 points for the Xbox Live Marketplace, and a $20 mail in rebate.

If you know you are going to have Xbox Live for at least one year, go with choice C, $49.99 for a full year.

When doing the math, the two other choices will cost you more money per year than paying one time.

Thanks Eagle. Lemme elaborate for the math-impaired:

One year by monthly subscription: $96
One year by three-month subscription: $80
One year by one-year subscription: $50

Also, if you buy it in the store, you get an extra month free. So thats 13 months for 49.99.

It's also worth noting that you get a free month of Gold when you sign up for a Silver account.

If you want a separate Gold subscription for personal purposes(eg. a separate account if you are sharing a console with a friend or brother), you will have to pay the extra yearly cost of $49.99. So it would be about $100 for two Gold accounts per year.

*Thanks Tempest for that one *

Last November Circuit City had 12+1 month (13 months) Xbox LIVE subscription cards on sale for fourty bucks, ...that's like $3 dollars per month, so I bought two and stacked my live subscription to 26 months.
You still need a valid credit card and an MS Passport I.D. though.

Here's a deal similar to the Circuit City deal I got last year:

Ok, where'd the Diamond Level come from? I've never heard of it before (and that's after some 3 years of XBL).

For more confirmed info, you can go to the Xbox Live Homepage on Xbox.com.

From GamesFirst!:

Microsoft has announced a new perks card for members of their Xbox Live Gold service. Gold level members now qualify for a free "Diamond" card, which is an actual, real gamercard you can carry in your pocket. Now you can show off your Xbox geekiness even when you're away from your console. And wait, it doesn't stop there: The Diamond card qualifies holders for special deals and discounts at an array of retailers. If you're a Gold level member of Xbox Live, sign yourself up.

The card is free to any Gold level members, and signing up requires users to simply fill out a form in which they answer a questionnaire about Xbox and Xbox Live services. Members of Xbox Live on both the original Xbox and Xbox 360 qualify, so don't fret if you have yet to upgrade your console.

A complete list of the retailers and services discounted with the card has yet to be released, but so far we know that they include Ticketmaster, Cambridge Soundworks, Timberland, McDonald's, and "hundreds more." We've signed up for our Diamond cards, so we'll post more on the deals included with the card when we find out more. Until then, head over to http://www.xboxlivediamond.com/ to find out more and sign up for your free card.

Tons of places, if you think about it, it probably has a discount for Diamond Card holders. I'll scan the thick piece of formal paper that I got with my card. It has some of the sponsers on the back.

As for what you get, Discounts up to 20% off or "Buy 1, Get 1 Free" sort of stuff. I can get 2 Popeye's Chicken Meals for the price of 1!
