i was really surprised by the "vegtable steak with (some type of, maybe soy?) sauce" MRE. i thought it would tase like crap, turned out to be one of my favorites.

Yeah I know how you feel. The vegetarian MREs usually turn out to be really good. Though there is one MRE that most if not all soldiers and marines tend to avoid, the dreaded cheese egg omelete. If I was ever so unfortunate to be left with that one... i would eat everything but the main course. Then again if you are really hungry and in need of sustainence... then yes someone would eat the cheese egg omelete. A well known general said it the best, "an army marches on it's stomach".

I haven't seen an cheese and veggie omelet MRE since I enlisted in 2008, and although the main course itself was disgusting, the poptarts it came with were awesome. Rumor has it that it's actually been discontinued, and I've seen the sandwiches in the First Strike rations, granted I haven't seen those since my first month in Afghanistan.

They're not so bad as their reputation makes them out to be, and there have honestly been a few days out here where I've walked into the DFAC before a flight, looked at what they were trying to pass off as food for the night, and decided to just go find an MRE.

There's just something about sandwiches for every meal for the 4th night in a row, or whatever creamed beef is supposed to be that makes me wonder if the Taliban has infiltrated our chow hall...

Granted the food ( if you can call it that sometimes ) at the DFAC wasn't all that bad. Atleast they never fucked up the eggs or fries. Besides after an Op, Convoy, or FTX... hot DFAC food is never turned down ( atleast in my experience ).

The eggs are powdered (unless you want to stand in a 20 minute line for an omelette), the fries are decent but I'm usually flying over lunch time. And getting up for dinner would screw my crew rest. It's breakfast food only, and only so long as we brief in time. Then it's a choice of sandwiches, which are fine for a while, but after your 3rd week of nothing but sandwiches for two meals a day you start to go a bit crazy, or MREs. At least MREs have some variety to them.

Even the gum can't hold off the MRE brick poop for long. I know the first time I get to use my bathroom at home it's going to be epic. I'm also looking forward to crapping and showering not being group events.
