Capcom's solution is "on-disc DLC". There's also another, MUCH better solution called "patching it in". Media Molecule does it. Infinity Ward and Treyarch do it. Polyphony Digital does it. Why not everyone else?

Because then you'll have a chance of people missing/being misinformed about the compatibility packs, and so if they wanted to keep playing you're game they'll have to pay for something.

Im still thinking of what to purchase till now. Perhaps just the Shinden-II, but even that is a tad expensive.

As far as the CoD examples, it's only minor code changes that they're changing/updating client-side, so they can make it a very brief background download while you're in the MP menu. Stuff in the AH compatibility packs obviously takes up a lot more space since it's 3D models and textures as well, which can't really be downloaded subtly in the background while you're in the multiplayer menu.

Actually, CoD does do both hotfixes (background) and client updates that require manual download, but even those are rarely large.

Still, they do well to require those for MP. Hell, we BF3 players have to DL a 1.07 GB patch to keep on playing. The same should go for AH.

So that's how they do it.

Well LPB and GT5 go with the patching method for DLC compatibility so that everyone can play with each other. Both games' DLC add new meshes and textures, and that hasn't hindered them.

LBP and LBP2 have pretty massive amount of quite detailed DLC that gets patched in... like the LBP Pirates of the Caribbean level kit - which added FULLY FUNCTIONAL WATER EFFECTS and the patches allow players without the DLC to access player-created levels with water in them without needing the DLC themselves.

Transformers: War for Cybertron had 2 characters who weren't on-disc models that were added in a later patch, and they could be used in games where players didn't have the DLC (although the DLC maps that came with the characters broke the game for everyone, not just the people who didn't buy them). They included the models, textures and animations in a patch (although only the transforming animations were unique).

Brink has DLC that's partly on-disc, but some weapon models and graphical effects were added, and they've been patched in so they appear properly for players without the DLC.

World of Warcraft has included patches that go along with each expansion to the game, both rebalancing weapons, abilities, races and classes, AND adding new races and classes with unique animations, class options, abilities, etc. DC Universe Online has had multiple expansions now, each of which has come with a patch that makes the powers and animations work properly for players without the DLC. They're MMOs, so it's a little different, but only in the sense that NOT doing it right would COMPLETELY break the game instead of just splitting the playerbase, which only MOSTLY ruins it.

It's not an isolated "only a couple of companies have done it" situation, and it's not limited to "minor code changes" either.

Of course, Soul Calibur 5 (another Namco/Bandai game) appears to be using the same "compatibility pack" setup as Assault Horizon, so it's probably their "thing" to screw the playerbase over like this.

You're right there. Although I find it odd that the DLC along with the compability pack 1 are all the same size each.

I'm still kinda hoping for the X-02 Wyvern to appear somewhere down the line for AC:AH or any future AC games.

It is, the Macross paints and the latest IM@S are part of the same pack.

Does that mean if I sign in on my Japanese PSN (I made it for an NHL Hockey game, haha) that the macross skins will show, in liu of the Id@lmaster skins?

Question: how good exactly is the GR. 4 Tornado?
IDK, thought id ask. I'm more of a multi-role guy. Ground attack gets boring especially when you're being chased by a fighter.
I just got the ASF-X Shinden II, F-15MTD, Su-37, and the YF-23. :D
Funds courtesy of YouTube AdSense...

I waited quite awhile to try the Tornado, but I absolutely had a great time using it once I finally did! I found it to be suprisingly faster and more agile than I had previously thought before. It is also quite a bit fun to paint, If you ask me.
If it's hard, you're doin it wrong!
