Well, I'm thinking of breaking down and getting a PSP, mainly to play ACX but I don't want to spend over $200 for one game. There is another game that looks interesting, Field Commander. From what little I've read and seen about it, it seems to be a game I'd be interested in. A true strategy game, not a blood-and-gore-hack-and-slash-for-graphics-only game. Just wondered if anyone here has played the game and could maybe give a good description of the gameplay.

Well, you could call it tactical TBS, and if you're familiar with Advance Wars, you'll be very familiar with the gameplay. There's only one resource- money- that is gathered by controlling cities dotted around the map, and the only purpose for the money is to buy units. Several different buildings types are in the game, including several superweapons. The campaign has a pretty cardboard story with throwaway dialogue, but their are a couple of branching missions. There are a large number of divisions that you can (eventually) select from, and each of which has its own special modifiers and abilities. Speaking of abilities, each division has two special abilities. To access them, you fill up a bar by killing the enemy’s units. You can play skirmishes on a number of maps (including ones from the campaign), and I hear that the online multiplayer is far better than the offline modes.
Umm, there’s probably plenty of stuff I’ve forgotten, but the above wall-‘o-text is as far as I’m going right now. |

Thanks for the review. Actually I handled a PSP today.....and well....I wasn't impressed. If they brought down the price, to say, around $100, maybe. I've heard the PSP is really bombing out and Sony maybe making a mistake with the PS3 since it so overpriced compared with XBox and Nintendo.
The PS2 could be my last gaming console |

Well the Xbox 360 isn't necessarily top notch equipment. Sony put a lot more effort and time into making the PS3 much better. Now I'll admit that it doesn't have as many good games as the xbox but at least they can make some extremely high quality graphics games.

IMO Real Time Strategy games should be kept to the PC.When I was at my friend's house, we played Battle for Middle Earth II on his XBOX 360. I didn't like it compared to when I playe dit on the OC (which wasn't great either).

I've played it. It's pretty fun, although it's a departure if you're used to playing something like Starcraft. Definately fun though, especially if your friends don't have a PSP themselves.

Just coming back to this old topic.
I never got the PSP. If the PSP was more along the size of the old Lynx portable game system I may have gotten one but the PSP was just too small....and overpriced IMO. I did find a TBS game that sounds very much the way some of you described Field Commander. It's called Senryaku Dai VII: Modern Combat Tactics. Keep in mind this game was not designed to awe you with blood&guts graphics, it is a game to make you think and plan ahead. The game has me hooked, to a certain degree. One flaw I discovered was the 50 unit maximum. This makes it extremely difficult to defend all your bases. Another is that all production of military units have to be done from the capitol city or the capitol airport. This keeps your supply lines very drawn out. I'm in a game that I currently can't win. I'm on the enemy's territory but he's keeping up his 50 units in the field but only has to travel a few grids to the front. On the other hand, I have conquered and held more cities, factories, airports, ports and refineries and my funds are overflowing but I'm kept at the same 50 unit max but have to travel clear across the board. What I have now is a sort of WWI scenario, a series of see-saw battles going. Anyway, while writing this post I thought of something that may work. I really don't like this game... I have a PSP and all I use it for now, is for music, photos, and videos. This game was very boring to me, especially when your opponent takes their turn, it just takes SO long to do.
